If you have studied
up on the game of roulette, then you have
most likely stumbled across some roulette
systems. In fact, there is an abundance of
roulette systems out there, many that
require you to pay for them. While these
betting systems will not reduce the
chances of you winning roulette, they also
will not reduce the house’s advantage or
change the odds in any way. The house edge
is a mathematical number that is
calculated based on the roulette wheel,
and as long as the wheel stays the same,
so will the percentage that the house has
over the roulette player. This is why the
house advantage in European roulette is
less than that of American
roulette—because the European wheel has
one less slot; thus, the odds are better
for the player.
Don’t make the
mistake of believing that a roulette
system will make a winning player out of a
losing player, but do use the systems in
the spirit of the game with the knowledge
that luck is the only real determining
factor in the outcome of roulette.
Here are some common
roulette systems you can play around with:
The Martingale Roulette System
The Martingale System
is the most common betting system for the
game of roulette. There are many versions
of this system, but the basic concept is
that each time you win, you should pocket
your bet, and each time you lose, you
should double your previous bet. When you
double your bet and win, you will,
theoretically, gain back the losses from
the previous spin, plus you will profit
the value of the bet. If the second bet
also results in a loss, you should then
double your third bet, so you that will
win one bet value.
This system, in
theory, would be very effective if bettors
had unlimited funds and no maximum cap on
betting limits. If you were playing at a
table with betting limits that fell
between a $10 minimum bet and a $500
maximum bet, you would inevitably fail
with this system because it would
eventually require a bet greater than
$500, and you would be forced to walk away
a loser. Furthermore, if you were still
playing at that point, it would be
painfully obvious that it just wasn’t
your day. Losing that many times in a row
is possible, and with the Martingale
System, you would only be gaining one bet
with every win, so you would never really
be up enough to recover.
The d’Alembert
Roulette System
The d’Alembert
System is another common roulette betting
system. This one assumes that a player is
less likely to win twice in a row.
Therefore, after you win, you would minus
one chip from your previous bet.
Alternatively, this system assumes that a
player is less likely to lose twice in a
row, so after losing once, a chip should
be added to your previous bet. The problem
here is that each new spin of the roulette
wheel is independent and separate from the
previous and following spins. Every spin
has the same exact chance of being a
winner or loser as every other spin.
Cancellation Roulette Systems
A Cancellation System
is based on a series of numbers that the
player writes down; the sum of these
numbers being the total winning goal for a
gambling session. The simplest example of
this is if you were to write down 1/1/1/1,
for a total sum of 4. If you were playing
at a $5 roulette table, then your winning
goal for the session would be $20. For
each bet, you take the sum of the numbers
on each end of the sequence. In this
example it would be 1 and 1, which adds up
to 2. If you were to win the bet, you
would mark off these numbers on each end.
The next bet would be the sum of the next
two numbers, and so on. If you were to
lose the bet, though, you would add the
betting unit(s) you just wagered to the
end of the list. The next bet would be the
sum of the outside numbers again. Much
like the Martingale System, explained
above, the Cancellation System is not
conducive with a bad streak or maximum
table limits, which ultimately ensure a
loss.
Remember, the sole
purpose of roulette is and should always
be considered as entertainment value.
There is no skill required, and no betting
system will ever alter the house
advantage. Like roulette, betting systems
should be considered as fun and never
taken seriously.
